History of True Cinnamon

A Timeline of True Cinnamon

For more than 2,000 years, the island of Sri Lanka, once known as Ceylon, has been home to the world's purest and most prized cinnamon, a golden-brown spice that ancient traders, Arab merchants, and European explorers crossed oceans to find, valuing it as highly as gold for its aroma, flavor, and healing power.

Antiquity

Egyptian pharaohs used cinnamon in sacred rituals and royal embalming, while the Romans and Greeks prized it as a luxury perfume and medicine. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe it as a spice of warmth, balance, and vitality, and for centuries, almost no one outside Sri Lanka knew where it truly came from.

1500s

Portuguese traders arrived in the early 1500s and uncovered the secret: the delicate inner bark of the Cinnamomum verum tree, grown along Sri Lanka's southern coast.

Colonial Era

Control of the spice passed to the Dutch and later the British, who established plantations and trade routes that carried Ceylon cinnamon's reputation across the world.

Today

Every stick is still hand-harvested, peeled, and rolled by skilled Sri Lankan artisans, continuing a tradition passed down through generations. It remains distinct from the thicker, stronger cassia found elsewhere for its delicate sweetness, fine layers, and low coumarin content.

Modern Relevance

Modern Science, Ancient Wisdom

Ceylon cinnamon has found a new identity in the modern world, not just as a spice, but as a symbol of natural health and purity. Scientific research now supports what ancient healers once knew: it helps regulate blood sugar, fights inflammation, and supports heart and brain health.

Our Legacy

At Veruma, we carry forward this legacy, honoring the people, land, and history behind every roll of cinnamon. Each stick you hold is not just a spice, but a story of heritage, honesty, and the timeless truth of nature.
