History of True Cinnamon
From Ancient Treasure to Modern Wellness
For more than 2,000 years, the island of Sri Lanka once known as Ceylon has been the home of the world’s purest and most prized cinnamon. Ancient traders, Arab merchants, and European explorers all journeyed across oceans in search of this golden-brown spice, valued as much as gold for its aroma, flavor, and healing power.
In the days of Egyptian pharaohs, cinnamon was used in sacred rituals and royal embalming. The Romans and Greeks cherished it as a luxury perfume and medicine, while ancient Ayurvedic texts described it as a spice of warmth, balance, and vitality. Every strand of cinnamon carried mystery no one outside Sri Lanka truly knew where it came from.
When the Portuguese arrived in the early 1500s, they discovered the secret: the gentle inner bark of the Cinnamomum verum tree, grown along Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Control of this precious spice soon passed to the Dutch and later the British, who built plantations and trade routes that made Ceylon cinnamon famous across the world.
Unlike the thicker, stronger Cassia cinnamon found elsewhere, True Ceylon Cinnamon became known for its delicate sweetness, fine layers, and low coumarin content — making it not just flavorful, but safe for daily use.
Even today, every stick is hand-harvested, peeled, and rolled by skilled Sri Lankan artisans, continuing a centuries-old tradition passed through generations.
In the modern world, Ceylon cinnamon has found a new identity — not just as a spice, but as a symbol of natural health and purity. Scientific research now supports what ancient healers once knew: it helps regulate blood sugar, fights inflammation, and supports heart and brain health.
At Veruma, we carry forward this legacy — honoring the people, land, and history behind every roll of cinnamon.
Each stick you hold is not just a spice, but a story — of heritage, honesty, and the timeless truth of nature.
At Veruma, we carry forward Sri Lanka’s centuries-old cinnamon heritage with honesty and care.
Our cinnamon is sourced directly from family-run farms in the southern hills of Sri Lanka, the same lands where true cinnamon first grew wild. Every stick is hand-peeled, sun-dried, and rolled by skilled artisans, preserving the craft that has defined Ceylon cinnamon for generations. From soil to spice jar, we uphold purity, transparency, and respect for the people who make this possible.
This is not just cinnamon — it’s a promise of authenticity and trust.
